After serving 23 years in the United States Navy, I thought I was prepared for just about anything. What I didn’t fully anticipate was how intimidating the transition from military service to the civilian workforce would feel. For more than two decades, the Navy gave me structure, purpose, and a clear path forward. Stepping away from that world meant starting over learning a new language, a new system, and a new way of defining my value.
Like many service members approaching retirement, I carried a lot of anxiety into that transition. The biggest question weighing on me was simple but heavy: How am I going to support my family after the Navy? I knew I had experience, leadership, and technical skills, but translating those into something the civilian workforce could recognize felt overwhelming.
That’s when I connected with NextOp, and everything changed.
From the very beginning, NextOp focused on equipping me with the tools I needed to confidently step into civilian life. They didn’t just offer advice—they provided structure, guidance, and consistent engagement during a time when uncertainty can easily take over. One of the most valuable skills they helped me develop was resume authoring. Turning military roles and responsibilities into clear, civilian-friendly language is no small task, but NextOp made the process manageable and intentional.
Beyond the resume, they helped bridge the gap between military experience and civilian job requirements. Translating military skills into terms that hiring managers understand was a critical piece of the puzzle, and it’s something NextOp does exceptionally well. They also provided coaching on interviewing techniques—how to tell my story, how to confidently speak about my experience, and how to position myself as a strong candidate in a competitive job market.
What truly sets NextOp apart, though, is access. Through their program, I was exposed to real job requisitions and, more importantly, given direct points of connection with hiring managers. That kind of access is invaluable, especially for veterans who may not have an existing civilian professional network. NextOp didn’t just prepare me for opportunities—they helped create them.
The weekly engagements were another cornerstone of the experience. Those consistent touch points ensured I stayed on track, stayed informed, and never felt like I was navigating the transition alone. Week by week, the fear and anxiety that came with leaving the Navy began to ease. I replaced
uncertainty with confidence and direction.
Looking back, I can confidently say that NextOp played a critical role in making my transition smooth and sustainable. They helped me move forward with clarity, confidence, and peace of mind, especially knowing my family would be supported in the next chapter of my life.
Transitioning out of the military is never easy, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With the right support, guidance, and community, it can be the beginning of something just as meaningful as the career you leave behind.
For me, NextOp was that bridge—and I’m grateful I didn’t have to cross it alone.
